ICTR Research Laboratory Core

Overview of Services

This Laboratory has been operating since 1992 as a high throughput specialized immunoassay laboratory supporting clinical studies performed at the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus and the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Other clients have included the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Baltimore VA Medical Center, components of the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore and Bethesda, Georgetown University/MedStar Health Research Institute, Mercy Medical Center, University of North Carolina, University of Pittsburgh and the Windber Research Institute. The laboratory supports clinical studies through consulting, sample processing, storage and analysis.

The Research Laboratory Core  is housed in the Asthma and Allergy Center at the Bayview Medical Campus and performs over 100 different assays of clinical chemical endpoints and biomarkers to support pre-clinical and clinical research protocols.

The ICTR Research Laboratory Core additionally supports ICTR-approved protocols by providing (a) consultation on research methodologies with respect to study design, selection of most appropriate assays, specimen logistics, data QC/QA and interpretation; and (b) facilities, technical experience, and training for non-routine blood, saliva, CSF (cerebrospinal fluid), and urine processing storage and biochemical analyses. The Core Laboratory is staffed by a director and three full-time technicians with the expertise to support investigators as they plan and implement their protocols.

The Core Laboratory provides standardized sample handling that upholds high quality control by, for example, minimizing freeze/thaw cycles. The high volume of assays processed in the lab supports reduced investigator cost through batch analysis of samples and direct manufacturer pricing. Quality control is maintained by including manufacturers’ controls as well as low, medium, and high value in-house controls in each assay.
